CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962)

WANNEROIL / HUILE DU BON CHAUFFEUR. 1926.

63x46½ inches, 160x118 cm. Les Belles Affiches, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and image; slight darkening along creases in image; expert overpainting in margins.

In this wonderful anthropomorphic representation, Loupot brazenly assembles cans of motor oil to resemble the head of a chauffeur, putting a cap and goggles on them for good measure. The visual association is achieved with the can still being recognizable, the image being merely an "indication, drawing minds to a room without fixing them on a subject" (Vendre, July 1926, p. 53). Loupot takes one further genius step in equating his design with the product being sold. The golden oil itself, pouring out of one of the cans, infuses the overlapping letters of the brand's name, as if lubricating the letters in the same manner it would on pistons in an engine.
