CHARLES MERYON
La Galerie Notre-Dame.

Etching on tissue-thin, fibrous, tan laid Japan paper mounted onto cream laid paper at the upper corners, 1853. 130x95 mm; 51/4x33/4 inches. First state (of 6), before the shading on the clouds and with the crow flying at the left partially shaded. Signed (?) and numbered "40" in pencil, lower margin on the mount. Trimmed inside the plate mark, small loss lower right edge at the base of the column. A brilliant, luminous impression.

A scarce, early proof, probably trimmed and mounted by the artist. Schneiderman cites several trimmed proofs of other etchings by Meryon, all of which incidentally are in the first state, Le Petit Pont, La Rue des Toiles, à Bourges, Le Pont-au-Change, L'Abside de Notre-Dame and L'Ancien Louvre (Schneiderman 20, 31, 40, 45 and 96), indicating that this was not an uncommon practice for the artist. Schneiderman notes only one other first state impression of the current work: at the Frick Collection, New York. Schneiderman 29.
