CHARLES MERYON
Le Stryge.

Etching, 1853. 170x130 mm; 6 3/4x5 1/8 inches, full margins. Sixth state (of 10), with the burnishing marks and before the title lower center. A superb, early impression of this scarce etching.

According to Schneiderman, "Le Stryge is one of the stone gargoyles leaning on the parapet of the upper balcony on a tower of Notre-Dame, Paris. This famous view by Meryon (1821-1868) shows the gargoyle frowning in the immediate foreground, with an aerial view of Paris stretching off into the background."

Schneiderman cites 27 known impressions of the etching in this state in worldwide public collections. Schneiderman 27.
