CHARLES PAINE HAMPTON COURT / BY TRAM. 1922.
30x20 inches. Sanders Phillips & Co., London.
Condition B+: minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; restored pinholes in corners.
All of Paine's posters were marked by a sense of progressive and modernist design. This image breaks new ground. In the form of an untranslatable Rhebus, Paine depicts what appear to be Tudor ladies in flower pots and Henry VIII as a gardener, making the public decipher the graphic message: Hampton Court=Royal Gardens. Even more improbable are the appearance of what appear to be pixilated birds, or dingbats, as would be found on modern computers!
