CHARLES PEARS (1873-1958) DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN.
40x50 inches. David Allen & Sons London.
Condition B+: restoration and minor overpainting along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tear in image.
Pears is best known as a maritime painter, working during both World War I and II as an official Naval Artist. Many of the posters he designed for the different British Railway companies (LMS, LNER, SR and GWR) reflect his love of ships and the sea. However, an equal number of his graphic works celebrate young women frolicking in the surf. Here a woman is enjoying the broad beach in Douglas (also known as Douglas Sands), the capital of the Isle of Man, with the famed Tower of Refuge visible in the distance.
