Charles Pears was a prolific designer who worked for all of the main poster producing entities in the United Kingdom. He designed more than thirty posters for the London Underground, and also did a lot of work for the British Railway companies. This poster is for another big client, The Empire Marketing Board, whose president, Sir John Tallent, always commissioned excellent posters. Here, to promote the British Empire's fish business (if not a healthy, wholesome national diet), Pears uses the horizontal format of the poster to great advantage. With his meticulous illustration skills, he depicts an active fish and chips counter and a cross-section of the populace indulging in the culinary national institution; a sailor, a solider, an old lady, a young lady, a man in his bowler, and two children. The message is clear: everyone should eat fish and chips.
