39 3/4x25 inches,101x63 1/2 cm. Johnson, Riddle & Co., Ltd, London.

Pears is best known as a maritime painter, working during both World War I and II as an official Naval Artist. Many of the posters he designed for the different British Railway companies (LMS, LNER, SR and GWR) reflect his love of ships and the sea. He also designed several posters for the Underground. This image is from a series of four, including "The Film-Goer," "The Student," and "The Playgoer," that is atypical for his work, in both its muted color scheme and depiction of people.
