CHARLES PEARS THE CAMBRIAN COAST. 1938.
39 1/2x49 3/4 inches. Lowe & Brydone, London.
Condition B+: repaired tears and restoration in margins and corners.
Langorous and wave-lapped, this bathing beauty is depicted in a seductive style far more in keeping with advertising in the 1980s than in the 1930s. Cole and Durack contend that "the Great Western enthusiastically promoted the magnificent scenery and charm of Wales" (Railway p. 50), but here Pears highlights one extraordinary feature of the coastline in a manner that may very well have been the inspiration for the famous beach scene in From Here to Eternity. Railway p. 50.
