Schreyvogel (1861-1912) was born to a poor German immigrant family on the Lower East Side of New York and despite limited travels became one of the most popular western artists at the turn of the last century. He was largely self-taught and lived most of his life in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he produced the majority of his work, drawing his models en plein air on the rooftop of his Hoboken apartment building.
Anne Morand, former curator, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, and C. M. Russell Museum, Great Falls, has confirmed the authenticity of this drawing.
