CHARLES SHEELER
The Delmonico Building.

Lithograph, 1926. 250x173 mm; 9 7/8x6 7/8 inches, full margins. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. A superb impression with all the subtle tonal variations printing clearly.

Sheeler, who is recognized as one of the founders of American modernism, based his composition for the Delmonico Building lithograph on a 1926 photograph of the same title. His photograph had appeared in Vanity Fair in November of that year. As a printmaker, Sheeler used techniques that complemented his photography. He referred to himself as a "Precisionist," a term referring to intense focus on linear precision in composition, which is brilliantly illustrated in The Delmonico Building.

The Delmonico Building is located on 5th Avenue and 44th Street. Gordon 4.
