CHARLES SHEELER
Yachts.

Lithograph, 1924. 203x254 mm; 8x10 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 14/35 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this extremely scarce lithograph.

Yachts was based on an unrealized film project collaboration between Sheeler (1883-1965) and New York photographer Paul Strand (1890-1976) in the early 1920s. The film, the artists' second film venture together, was to be about the New York Yacht Club. Sheeler completed Pertaining to Yachts and Yachting, an oil painting on the same subject in 1922, now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Both the painting and the current lithograph use Cubist abstraction to convey the grace and swiftness of the vessels. Gordon 3.
