CHARLES WHITE (1918 - 1979)
Bessie (Smith).

Linoleum cut printed in blue, black and mauve on thin Japan paper, 1950. 12x9 inches; 305x228 mm; full margins. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "2/8 PRINTS" in pencil, lower margin.

Provenance: Heritage Gallery, Los Angeles; private collection, Los Angeles.

A superb, richly-inked impression of this very scarce print; we have not found another impression printed in these colors. Gedeon notes how this small edition of eight was printed in three color combinations: tan/black, green/black and this version of blue, mauve and black. The linocut is based on the artist's same-titled tempera painting of the popular blues singer from the same year. Gedeon Eb6.
