Engraving and etching, circa 1575. 464x312 mm; 18 1/4x12 1/4 inches, small margins. Proof, before the inscriptions and with the uncleaned plate edges lower margin. A brilliant, early impression of this large, scarce engraving.
We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 25 years.
The central figural group is based on Michelangelo's late Pietà, marble, circa 1550, now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence. Bartsch 23.
