Additional Details

Wentworth Cheswill (1746-1817), was the grandson of Richard Cheswill, a man identified in the Newmarket records as a "Negro," and son of Hopestill Cheswill, a housewright who built the John Paul Jones house and several other landmarks. By 1775, a landlord and politically active, Cheswill was decidedly for the patriot cause, and as a member of the Safety Committee of Newmarket, made the same ride from Boston as did Paul Revere, to warn the people of Newmarket of the imminent British attack. He held successive offices in Newmarket as town assessor, town auditor, selectman, coroner, and justice of the peace. He is not mentioned in the leading Negro biographies.
