CHILDE HASSAM
Spring in Milligan Place.

Etching, 1927. 135x240 mm; 5 1/4x9 3/8 inches, full margins. Signed with the artist's cypher and inscribed "imp" in pencil, lower right. A very good impression of this scarce etching, with crisp plate edges, strong contrasts and the artist's tack holes for drying at the extreme sheet edges.

The original townhomes on Milligan Place, located off Sixth Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets, date from the mid-1800s. This Greenwich Village, New York alley was once accessed from Christopher Street, but is now approached through a locked iron gate on Sixth Avenue. Among the former distinguished residents of Milligan Place is the famed playwright Eugene O'Neill.

We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years. Cortissoz/Clayton 312.
