CHILDE HASSAM
The Dutch Door.

Etching, 1915. 215x250 mm; 8 3/8x9 7/8 inches, wide margins. Signed with the artist's cypher and inscribed "imp" in pencil, lower right. A superb impression of this very scarce etching.

This is a portrait of Miss Helen Burke, the daughter of Toby Burke, the proprietor of a public house in Cos Cob, Connecticut, at one of the doors of the Bush-Holley house. Starting in the 1890s, Hassam (1859-1935) began making summer painting excursions to Gloucester, Massachusetts; Cos Cob, Connecticut; and Old Lyme, Connecticut, from his then studio base in New York.

We have found only 8 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Cortissoz/Clayton 49.
