CHILDE HASSAM
The Writing Desk.

Etching printed in black on cream wove paper, 1915. 252x177 mm; 10x7 inches, full margins. Signed with the artist's cypher and inscribed "imp." in pencil, lower right A superb, well-inked impression of this important etching with strong contrasts and with crisp, partially inky plate edges and the tack holes for drying at the extreme sheet edges.

This is a portrait of Hassam's wife, Kathleen Doan, at a desk in the dining room of the Bush-Holley house in Cos Cob. It is one of his largest and most complex etchings and looks back to the intimate, family etchings Whistler made during the late 1850s, like that of Deborah Haden, Reading in Bed, lot 5. Cortissoz/Clayton 54.
