Frontispiece portrait (in Vol. 2), two engraved double-page maps, and 285 copper engravings and plans after J.B. Hilaire, Moreau le Jeune, and others, on 168 plates containing views, architectural details, costumes and plans, plus head- and tail-pieces and double-page table. Folio, 1/2 maroon morocco over cloth, gilt-stamped 5-banded spine, scattered rubbing and scuffing; all edges trimmed and marbled, scattered moderate foxing; bookplates in all volumes. Additional Details

Choiseul-Gouffier traveled with the artist Jean-Baptiste Hilaire to the Levant in 1776 and published the first volume of this work in 1782, containing Hilaire's magnificent plates of both Greece and Turkey. It was so well received that Choiseul-Gouffier was appointed French ambassador to Constantinople, later publishing the two parts of Vol. 2, the last posthumously following his death in 1817.
