CHRISTIAN PIPER (1941-2019)

Tom Savarese at Hurrah Tuesday Nites.
Offset lithograph poster. 585x812 mm, 23x32 inches. Conceptual Litho, [New York]. 1977.

German-born Piper studied art and design in his native country before moving to America in the 1970s. He worked with Milton Glaser at the Push Pin Studio and went on to jobs with the New York Times and Vogue magazine. He is best remembered for his work on record album covers, specifically "Tattoo You" for the Rolling Stones in 1981. This poster advertises the opening party on March 15, 1977, for Tom Savarese's weekly DJ residency at New York's first large dance club to feature industrial, punk and new wave bands. Savarese is considered the first professional disco DJ in the United States, and by 1977 was lauded by Billboard magazine as "New York DJ of the year." It is uncertain whether Savarese played more than one evening at the venue.
