This group of photographs, many of which are the basis for the paintings of the same subjects, was created by Close with the assistance of the photographer Bevan Davies. Close chose the models and directed the lighting, setup and pose, as well as the expressions, and Davies tripped the shutter and processed the film.
The test Polaroids show the subtle changes that Close made to achieve the appearance of the large color and black and white prints which act as the blueprints for the paintings.
