AN AUTHORITY ON 1ST DUKE OF MARLBOROUGH CORRECTS ERROR IN PLAY ON THE DUCHESS CHURCHILL, WINSTON S. Typed Letter Signed, with holograph salutation and closing, to actress Irene Vanbrugh ("My dear Miss Vanbrugh"), praising her performance and that of the role of Queen Anne in the play Viceroy Sarah, correcting an error in dating the scenes of the play, explaining that he could not make an appointment at tea time because he must be in the House of Commons when the India Bill is under discussion, and in a postscript, giving approval to publish his correction if they choose to do so. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, first page personal stationery, written on separate pages; folds. Westerham, Kent, 1 March 1935

Additional Details

"I enjoyed Viceroy Sarah very much. I thought the many difficulties of a historical play of this kind were admirably surmounted . . . .
"The last scene is dated on the programme as January 1711. . . . They counted the year from the 1st of April and consequently January 1711 is really January 1712. Marlborough commanded the armies all through 1711 and was not dismissed until the beginning of the next year. . . .
"I am hardly ever in London at tea time except when the India Bill is on. Then I am glued to my bench in the House of Commons, so pray forgive me if I do not make an appointment."
