CHURCHMAN, JOHN. To the American Philosophical Society this Map of the Peninsula between Delaware & Chesopeak Bays [etc.]. Engraved folding map, 570x430 mm, margins just ample; hand-colored in outline; small hole in western Virginia, moderately but evenly toned; entirely mounted to a stiff board; matted and framed. Baltimore?, [1778]?

Additional Details

A scarce map issued separately and very rarely encountered. Despite the mounting and small hole this is a nice copy of the map.
The map exists in two states, with this copy being in the first state before the addition of the word "humbly" and the extending of the Susquehanna River. Wheat and Brun (#477) date the map to sometime around 1778, based on references in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society from 1779. Phillips, Maps of America (page 263) lists Baltimore as the likely place of printing but dates the map as late as 1788.
