Select collection of 130 photographs of circus and sideshow performers, comprising 16 cartes-de-visite and 121 cabinet, boudoir and promenade cards. With 32 images by Charles Eisenmann, including 24 cabinet cards, 7 cdvs, and one portrait of P. T. Barnum, with his facsimile signature. Albumen prints, from 33/4x21/2 inches (9.5x6.3 cm.) to 71/4x43/4 inches (18.4x12 cm.), most with the photographer's credit imprinted on mounts recto/verso; most with an identifying caption. 1860s-80s

A wonderful collection of photographs depicting performers associated with some of "the greatest shows on earth" that is accompanied by two pieces of circus memorabilia: Jack "The Giant" Earle's oversize ring, which is housed in a contemporary black velvet top hat-style jewelry case. And an engraved umbrella handle that reads, "Arnold Smith, Canvas Dept., Barnum & Baileys' show." The lot also contains an illustrated souvenir book entitled "Barnum and Bailey Tour of 1897," that pictures Mr. Smith, lists which towns the circus visited, and includes "such incidents that are of general interest."
