CLAES OLDENBURG
11 Geometric Mouses.

Ink rubber stamp on very thin wove paper. 295x210 mm; 11x81/8 inches (sheet). Ex-collection Professor Kasper König, Director of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne and private collection, Munich.

Starting in 1965, the mouse's head quickly became part of Oldenburg's personal imagery. Its first form was a mask based on a profile of a movie projector in the performance piece Moveyhouse, according to Oldenburg's text in Notes. Oldenburg presented his exhibit for the Maus Museum at Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. The rubber ink stamp was popularized as an art form by Ray Johnson with his "mail art" at the time. See Axsom pg. 131 and 212.
