Feiffer commentary: Claire Bretécher started out as a cartoonist working for French publications imitating the Feiffer strip, "Sick, Sick,Sick." They looked very much like me, except they dealt with women. She would do with women what I was doing with "Bernard and Hughie" and things like that. When I was in Paris, I made it my business to meet her because I was interested in this Feiffer imitator. I didn't think she was doing great imitations of mine, but I thought she was interesting. I think visually this is clearly Herriman influenced and I like it. Later her comic strips became a fixture in French newspapers and magazines for decades. Her work also appeared around the world; in the United States she was published in Ms. magazine, Esquire and National Lampoon.
