CLARENCE JOHN LAUGHLIN (1905-1985)
The Circus Venus. Silver print, the image measuring 11x14 inches (27.9x35.6 cm.), the mount 14x17 inches (35.6x43.2 cm.), with Laughlin's signature, title, and date, in white pencil, on mount recto. 1964

Additional Details

Clarence John Laughlin's "The Circus Venus" is in overall very good to near excellent condition with beautiful gray tones and crisp, textural detail.

The ferrotyped image exhibits some surface inconsistencies from the ferrotyping process; these are largely at the edges, and visible only under raking light. There is a small cluster of short, linear surface rubs to the right of the central nude figure, which are visible in raking light and not when viewed directly.

The print retains very narrow margins, which are bright and clean. The print is mounted on the original black board. The edges of the mount are rubbed, mostly at the corners, this not impacting the image area or signature area.

The mount recto with Laughlin's signature, title, and date, in white pencil, and annotated, in ink, on verso, "Circus Wagon, Barbarboo Collection of Wisconsin Historical Society."

Gifted by Laughlin to a Private Collector, who was also a personal friend.
