CLAUDE GELLÉE, LE LORRAIN
Le Pâtre et la bergère.

Etching and drypoint, circa 1630. 177x129 mm; 71/8x51/8 inches, full margins. First state (of 3). Partial double-headed eagle (?) watermark (not Mannocci 21, but also probably the first half of the 18th-century). Ex-collection unknown collector, with their inscription "No. 11" in ink, lower left recto (not in Lugt). A very good, early impression, with the burr printing on the drypoint lines in the upper right and with strong plate tone.

Like the Ruischer print above, this early work by Claude (1600-1682) shows the influence of Hercules Seghers. Claude's clumps of foliage and densely etched landscape resemble Segher's "Landscape with Tobias and the Angel" on which Rembrandt later burnished out and redid the right portion of the plate as "The Flight into Egypt" (Bartsch 56). Mannocci 3.
