CLAUDE HENRY BUCKLE (1905-1973)

BATH / 'THIS ENGLAND OF OURS.' 1933.

39x49 inches, 99x124½ cm. Waterlow & Sons Ltd., England.
Condition B+: creases and repaired tears in margins and image, some with slight overpainting; creases, abrasions and minor overpainting along vertical fold; minor abrasions in margins.

Claude Buckle designed a number of posters for both Bath and neighboring Bristol. Their commonality was the attention he paid to architectural detail, as Furness explains, "Buckle was extremely adept at illustrating the fine detail of structures in his artwork" (Furness vol. 7, p. 22). "In 1933 the Great Western Railway issued a series of posters which featured thoroughly English places under the banner This England of Ours. Claude Buckle was the lead artist for this campaign [and here he depicts] the magnificent west front of the Abbey. The Roman Bath and Pump Rooms to the right and the buildings of the local rich golden limestone to the left frame a scene of hustle and bustle in Georgian times" (ibid. p. 24).

Furness vol. 7, p. 24.
