CLAY, HENRY. Autograph Letter Signed, "H. Clay," as Secretary of State, to R.W. Meade, thanking him for a favor and for his help concerning "young Hart," and opining that an allegedly false statement may have been published for the purpose of affecting K[entucky?] elections. 1 page, 4to; folds. Washington, 10 August 1827

Additional Details

". . . I approve and am very thankful for all you have done respecting young Hart. I hope Capt. Dallas will be able to keep him confined to the ship . . . The declaration imputed to Mr. Trimble he never could have made. I have no doubt it is a fabrication . . . [I]t first made its appearance in the Enquirer. And I should not be surprised if it were forged to get to K. and affect the elections there, before it was possible to diffuse a contradiction. It will have been well contrived for that purpose, if it could find believers. It is a part of a system of lying and forgery, most deliberately devised and extensively acted on."
