CLEMENCEAU, GEORGES. Autograph Letter Signed, "GClemenceau," to "Dear friend," in French, sending a document [not present] involving [Gabriel] Monod, inquiring why [Ernest] Judet is no longer a member of the association of former pupils of the École normale supérieure, and, in a postscript written vertically in left margin, requesting that the "Monod-gram" be returned. 1 page, 8vo, "L'Aurore" stationery; some loss to upper right corner, short closed separation at horizontal fold repaired verso with tissue. Gabriel Monod (1844-1912) was an eminent French historian, who believed that the bordereau (the memorandum which appeared to incriminate Alfred Dreyfus precipitating the Dreyfus Affair) was not written by Dreyfus and that the 1894 trial establishing his guilt was flawed. Ernest Judet (1851-1943) was director of France's largest daily, Le Petit Journal, and a bitter and long-standing opponent of Clemenceau.
