Gray (1918-2004) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, who was also associated with Lyrical Abstraction and Color Field painting. His work fuses these styles with Far Eastern artistic traditions, influenced by his involvement with Eastern philosophy. Following his studies at Phillips Academy, Andover, and Princeton University, service abroad in World War II and subsequent artistic training in Paris and New York, from the 1950s onward Gray lived and worked on a 90+ acre farm owned by his family in Litchfield County, Connecticut.
