This attractive Pop artwork is a scarce unique work by Cleveland Bellow, a central figure in the Bay Area art in California in the late 1960s and 1970s. Born in San Francisco, Bellow received a BFA in graphic design in 1969 and a MFA in illustration in 1971, both from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Samella Lewis and Ruth Waddy included him in the 1971 volume two of their important Black Artists on Art book series. He also exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the 1971 group exhibition Oversized Prints.

Bellow's artwork was recently included in the seminal traveling exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power organized by Tate Modern, London. Three of his prints are in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
