COCORICO. 1899.

Condition B: restoration and restored losses in corners; abrasions and discoloration in image.
Steinlen was commissioned to design the first poster used to advertise the magazine Cocorico<>. His bold rooster was also used as the magazine's first cover. Cocorico<> is the cry of a rooster, or "cock-a-doodle-doo". The rooster is the emblem of Gallic France, and the bird's cry is considered the chauvanistic shout of French patriots. The combination of the image and the word are so familiar to the French that Steinlen felt comfortable hiding part of the title behind the image. As can be seen by the printed list of talent, the magazine hired many of the era's top illustrators to contribute, without any regard to their nationality. Despite this incredible rooster roster, the magazine only ran for two years. Crauzat p. 140, Bargiel & Zagrodski p. 57.
