COLIN ELGIE (DATES UNKNOWN)
"Year of the Cat." Record album cover illustration for Year of the Cat (Al Stewart o RCA Records/UK, 1976). Airbrushed gouache on illustration board. 20 x 20 inches, matted and framed to 24 3/4 x 24 3/4 inches. Signed in lower right image. Includes copies of both the British and American LPs.

Colin Elgie is an English illustrator and former member of Hipgnosis, an art design group based in London that specialized in creating album cover artwork for rock musicians and bands. Elgie created this cover in 1976 for what some consider a masterpiece album by Al Stewart and produced by Alan Parsons. Critics praised Stewart's stylish elegance, combined with Parson's cinematic arrangements, as a flawless example of progressive pop.

The cover depicts a woman obsessed with cats. All of the items on her dresser have feline motifs. The reflection in the mirror reveals the woman dressing up as a cat for a costume party. Stewart used the same concept for the cover of his 2004 Greatest Hits album, replacing most of the cat items with references to his other songs.
