This is the first edition of Colton's atlas in which text is printed on the versos of maps. Rumsey distinguishes two issues of this edition of Colton's General Atlas - the first one (Rumsey 4735) with the ads dated March 19, 1856 and the second (Rumsey 150) with the ads dated October 1, 1856 and Dakota added to the map of the United States and the map of Minnesota. The copy here is an intermediate issue with the Publisher's Advertisement dated October 1, 1856 but no Dakota shown on the United States or Minnesota maps. Colton's General Atlas proved to be a popular publication and was reissued in revised editions until 1888. The color lithographed frontispiece appeared only in the 1857 edition of this atlas.
