Additional Details

A superb large format map of North America, with the United States almost completely in its modern configuration. Colton's Republics of North America was first issued in '57, and although it went through very many editions and was published over several decades, it is quite scarce today, especially in the present excellent condition.

Ownership inscription of Charles Harrod Boyd in lower left margin and on the front cover. ("Portland Maine C.H. Boyd U.S. Coast Survey".) Boyd was a career surveyor and soldier and served with distinction in the Civil War. In May, 1862, while surveying the James River, he captured six members of the 24th South Carolina Regiment.
