COME OUT!

Original cut-and-paste layouts for three issues of this important early magazine.

This lot includes the nearly complete original mockups for the three final issues of Come Out. The first is apparently issue 7 (no issue 6 is known) from circa December 1970, lacking only pages 1 and 14. It is followed by issue "7b" from Spring-Summer 1971 (lacking only the first and final pages) and issue 8 from Winter 1972 (lacking only pages 12 and 13). The articles were typeset, printed, and then laid out on large sheets of graph paper with tape or rubber cement, along with photo reproductions, original manuscript artwork, and other manuscript notes including page numbers. Some of the clipped pieces have begun to detach from the sheets, and the sheets have been subject to browning and wear from their decades of storage. Found tucked among the layouts are two related items: a mimeographed page from an article on gay men in prison, and a long original manuscript letter to the editor from supporter Jeannie Taylor of Iowa City. New York, circa 1970-72.

Additional Details

This overtly political publication extended beyond the struggle for gay liberation; it also grappled with the Vietnam War and offered measured support to the Black Panthers. These layouts are a fascinating artifact of the early post-Stonewall period in the New York scene.
