Additional Details

"Some time ago I became a Trustee of Clarke School for the Deaf of Northampton. . . . [T]his school . . . is now doing and has done a great national service in aid of the deaf . . . .
"We are anxious to increase and broaden the work of the school . . . . It is also desired to add a Research Department, which it is hoped will be of direct benefit to all those who are now deaf or who may later become so.
". . . [T]he Trustees have authorized the organization of a National Board of Directors . . . . A financial appeal to the country at large will be made during the coming fall under the auspices of the Trustees and this Board. . . .
"As Chairman of the Endowment Committee and upon the direction of the Trustees, it is my privilege formally to invite and personally urge you to accept a place upon this National Board of Directors. I know the value of the work of the school, not only form my long residence in Northampton . . . , but also from Mrs. Coolidge's connection some time since with its faculty. . . ."
Both Grace and Calvin Coolidge served on the Clarke School Board of Trustees, leading various efforts over the years to raise money and offer other kinds of support for the school's work, including arranging for students to visit the White House. The Clarke School has become Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech, and is this year celebrating its 150th anniversary.
