first and only edition. Anna Julia Cooper (1858-1964) is considered by many to be the author of the first feminist work by an African-American woman (A Voice from the South, 1892). The daughter of a slave and a free woman, she received her early education from the local Sunday school. She later attended Oberlin, then Columbia University, and studied abroad, receiving her doctorate from Howard University with the publication of this work.
