CORNELIS BEGA
A Seated Peasant and his Wife.

Etching. 78x50 mm; 31/8x2 inches, small margins. Second state (of 2). Ex-collection J. Burleigh James (Lugt 1425, verso). A superb, early impression, with inky plate edges.

Born into an artistic family, his father was a prominent goldsmith and his father-in-law was a renowned Mannerist artist, Bega (circa 1631-1664) trained in Haarlem with Adriaen van Ostade (see lot 78) and made many small etchings of peasants that imitate both his mentor and Rembrandt. Bartsch 22; Hollstein 22.
