Massijs (1508-circa 1556) was the son of the leading Antwerp painter Quinten Massijs. Already well- known for his graphic work, with anoeuvreconsisting of approximately 150 engraved subjects, Massijs is now considered an important figure in the transition from the fantastic landscapes of Maerten van Heemsterck, Hieronymous Bosch and their followers to the "pure landscapes" of later 16th century Netherlandish painting.
