CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927)
W. E. B. Du Bois.

Silver print, 1918. 343x260 mm; 13 1/2x10 1/4 inches. With the artist's embossed stamp, "The Photographic Division, C.M. Battey, Instructor, Tuskegee Institute, Alabama," lower left.

This is one of the best known images of Du Bois, whom Battey met while living in New York. In 1909, Du Bois helped to found the NAACP and its magazine, The Crisis, which between 1915 and 1927 featured many of Battey's photographs on its covers.
