African-American painter and printmaker Eldzier Cortor, was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1916, but moved with his family to Chicago, Illinois when he was one year old. As a child, he created comic strips, copying the style Leslie Rogers' "Bungleton Green," and others. He attended Englewood High School with future artists Charles White and Charles Sebree. Later all would be considered part of the "Chicago Renaissance of Black Art" of the 1930s and '40s. He was one of the artists featured in the early Harmon Foundation exhibits in New York.
