Pastel on paper; 11 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Rejected cover design for The New Yorker, 1940. Matted. Will Cotten became one of the most celebrated American caricaturists of his generation when he began contributing to Vanity Fair in 1931. Eleanor Roosevelt thought the one he did of her was the best she had ever seen. He began contributing cover designs to The New Yorker the next year. Artists often submitted finished unsolicited cover ideas to the magazine that were never used. Cotton was also a portraitist and playwright and painted murals in several theaters in New York City. 1940
