Additional Details

Inscribed and Signed to Van Wyck Brooks "my very best to you and Mrs Brooks this strange Christmas. No. `strange' isn't the word. Doleful, materially-but morally brighter than before." Early in his career (circa 1920), Cowley placed a pair of articles in Brooks's Freeman, a newly launched magazine Cowley called "the whole of the youngest generation of critics." Cowley would also dedicate After the Genteel Tradition to Brooks in 1939. Though the two had their literary conflicts over the years, it didn't prevent Brooks from praising Exile's Return (1951) as "an irreplaceable literary record of the most dramatic period in American literary history."
