Additional Details

possibly earliest example of crane's signature.
The "Philo" in the inscription likely refers to the Philomathean Fraternity, a literary society of which Crane was probably a member. On the verso, a schoolmate begins her inscription with "Callilogian," which likely refers to the Callilogian Society, a literary sorority.
Crane was the only child among his siblings to lack a middle name; on at least one occasion other than the present one, he has used an invented middle name.
