CRISPIJN VAN DE PASSE (after Dirck van Baburen)
The Backgammon Players.

Engraving, circa 1625. 213x147 mm; 8 3/8x5 1/2 inches. Ex-collection Robert Walter Weir (Lugt 2559, verso). Trimmed on the plate mark. A very good, dark and well-inked impression of this scarce engraving.

Van de Passe (1589-1637) based this engraving on a painting by Van Baburen, circa 1622, now in a private collection, who in turn was inspired by Caravaggio. The Latin inscription upper center "Irarum causus fugito (Flee from the causes of anger)" is a warning to all who become too involved in the game; the Dutch inscription below is more scathing, and translates: "A dicer and gamer is a wretch, he drinks and squanders his money and beats his wife."
