Woodcut silhouette of noted African-American captain Paul Cuffee, 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches (image size) on a 9 1/2 x 6 18 inch sheet of paper. Depicts bust portrait of Cuffee with a background of a sailing ship and a representation of the shores of America and Sierra Leone, within an unbroken octagonal border; paper slightly and evenly toned, with a few pale dots. Additional Details

Paul Cuffee (1759-1817) sea captain, merchant and activist was deeply involved in the Sierra Leone movement of the late 18th-early 19th century. The present silhouette commemorated his first voyage to Sierra Leone, and appeared in The Non-Slaveholder for 1851.
