Additional Details

As professional interest in the Pictorialist movement waned, West Coast photographers such as Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Willard Van Dyke, and Ansel Adams shunned soft focus and painterly effects in favor of crisp views. The group eventually called themselves "f/64," after the tiny lens aperture that ensured fine detail in the negative. Like many young photographers, Cunningham made her living as a portraitist, but she found inspiration in the garden she tended. Her photographs of plants are portraits in their own right, revealing a poetic warmth and Cunningham's admiration for natural forms.
