". . . I am willing to be of any service I can in the proposed monument organization. I expect Genl Coombs would be as good a working view as you could get to represent Kentucky. Go to Louisville tomorrow to be on hand at the Bourbon sore head d_d fool convention which meets on the 3. Not a single prominent and respectable democrat has yet identified himself with it . . . I want to be present and look on at their proceedings. The only democrat who I know personally who I have heard express himself as intending to vote for the nominee of Louisville is one who swore from the first not to vote for Greeley, but stated his intention to vote for Grant . . . And many well informed people think the Bourbon nominee will take more votes from Grant than from Greeley. As about all the democrats who intended to or will vote for Greeley have long since made up their minds without effect. While the disgusted ones the last ditch chaps who never could as they say, vote for Greeley had out of spite and disappointment made up their minds to swallow Grant as their preference but now they will leave Grant and vote for the Louisville nominee if any man can be found fool enough to accept the nomination and prominent enough to attract any votes."
